In August 0f 2016 we celebrated Signal Mountain Grammar School (also known as Signal Mountain Elementary School) turning 90! We had games, music, business vendors, community organizations, food, activities, opportunities for pictures, and more food! Lolly Durant and Rita Irvin Smith organized this wonderful event. Below are some highlights.
ABOUT: The preservation of cultural history on Signal Mountain; the conservation of the legacy shared informally as a community; MACC, formally known as Signal Mountain Grammar School as a place that promotes a sense of belonging to theater groups, artist, musicians, civic groups, & garden clubs. The Mountain Arts Community Center embraces shared common values, arts and skills which are passed down through the teachers, parents, and like-minded citizens.
HISTORY: In the spring of 1999 the doors were closed on Signal Mountain Elementary and re-opened in the fall of 1999 as the Mountain Arts Community Center. MACC was accepted to the National Historic Registry in 2001. The school constructed in 1926 of native rock harvested from the south face of the mountain during the construction of the Signal Mountain Road was the first building for public use in the Town of Signal Mountain and served both as the school and as a meeting space for various civic groups.
2009 - Town of Signal Mountain took ownership
2016 - A Fine Arts Center with thousands of visitors a year!
